The building is believed to have originally been a single story structure built in 1888 and the second house of David C. Cook - Piru's founder. It supposedly was moved from the Park Street area to Main and Central sometime after 1980 when Cook's third residence was built. The style indicates it was probably converted to a hotel and considerably enlarged in the 1890's. The City Directory for 1898 lists it as the Piru Hotel with Mrs. Alice Gay as the manager. It is not certain who owned the hotel at the time. It may have been David C. Cook, for he did not sell off his property and return to Illinois until 1900. In 1911 William W. Lechler, a rancher in Piru Canyon, purchased the hotel. His wife ran the hotel and their family lived there. Mr. Lechler continued to manage the ranch. The 1912 City Directory for 1898 shows the name of the hotel changed to the Mountain View Hotel. The Lechler family managed the hotel and catered to ranchers, oil drillers and cattle buyers. The movie industry used the hotel during the filming of Ramona in 1910. An old guest book lists the names of such notables as D.W Griffiths and Mary Pickford. The first telephone company, the Sunset Telephone Company was located in the hotel. Today, the Heritage Valley Inn is historical landmark - Register #124.
